Week 5 post Peter V

In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Holden, the main character Holden has a very negative attitude towards life. He acts as if he does not care about anything. For example, he often disobeys the law by doing things such as drinking under age. I think his attitude is this poor because he wants to make his parents feel bad. His parents have sent him to multiple boarding schools. In these various boarding schools, Holden does not put much effort into any of his classes and continuously fails his classes over and over again. I think this is because Holden never truly felt the feeling of being loved by his parents. I think the reason he has this poor attitude is because he wants to show his parents he is not happy with his life. Hopefully by doing this his parents would feel guilty for him being sad and maybe change their ways towards him. All Holden really wants is to be loved. Unfortunately for him, he has never truly felt the feeling of love and therefore it is hard for him to show love for others. Thus resulting in Holden’s negative attitude. Holdens bad attitude is his parents fault.
