Week 6, Tyler P

There comes a time in everyones life where they must change. People are always asking us to change or telling us things that might make us change. For Holden, he didn't want to listen to any of it. For his whole life, the people around him have been telling him to grow up and do some soul searching and he just never listened. Holden is the type of person who only believes what he tells himself and thinks he'll make it on his own. But as we all know, the people who surround us can shape who we will become. The Catcher In The Rye presents evidence to the argument of Holden growing up and becoming a more mature human being. As Holden grows older and tries to live on his own he begins to realize growing up is more than just becoming older. It takes a lot of trust and confidence in who a person believes they are. When I was younger I wanted to become an adult more than anything. Just to have that title as an adult seemed so exciting. And now that I, as well as Holden, have reached that point it seems more challenging than I once thought. So with the help of others and the constant reminder to yourself that you are who you are and nothing is going to change, will help us become a better person in the end. Holden made the difference to himself before he cared what others thought. When a person makes the change and believes in the change, others will notice and treat you based on how you act towards yourself and society as a whole.

  1. Tyler, while I think that you are right that Holden only believes what he tells himself, I don’t agree with everything from your post. When you say that “he thinks he can make it on his own”, I do not agree with that at all. He may not have trust in anyone else, but I think that he has no interest in “making it” at all. He expresses no interest in school or his future. I think that he simply does not care at all about what happens in his future. You also say that “people who surround us shape who we will become.” I definitely agree with that. However, Holden does not have anyone around him, so it is up to him to shape what he will become. And without motivation or any interest in what he will become, I don’t think that Holden will ever grow up into a more mature person or adult.
