Growing up is something that everyone needs to do, but something everyone doesn’t always do. In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden has a lot of growing up to do but is in denial about it. Holden gets kicked out of boarding schools, he only believes what he wants to believe, and he only views things the way he wants to view them. He feels that how he acts is right and everyone else that acts different than him is wrong. Being kicked out of multiple schools shows how immature and mentally unstable he is. He can never move forward in his life if he refuses to apply himself to anything. It seems that Holden has a fear of confrontation with anyone or anything; he gets nervous and does what he can to keep himself from it. I noticed while reading the novel that any problem that Holden is faced with he runs away from to try and avoid dealing with it. He will never grow up if he can’t learn to problem solve and face his fears. The only way Holden can accomplish things and accept other people in his life is if he grows up and realizes that he can’t go through life successfully acting the way he does.

I understand what you are saying how people never seem to act like their age and sometimes never will. I believe it is what that person grew up with and how they grew up is why they may act like immature adults. As you said about Holden not wanting to solve a problem, it could have been something that happened in his childhood which makes him experience the need to run away and/or fight with someone because of the problems he had started or made worse. At times, Holden can act like a child, but sometimes he acts a lot older than he really is. I guess it could be he does not know how to act to different situations. Also it could be he does not understand what is going on around him, so he has all these different personalities. I think it is just a child trying to figure out what he is going to do with his life.
