For Holden, one of the main things he must learn to stop, is lying. As a little kid, I believe almost all of us told a lie. As he grows up, he will be held more accountable for what he claims is the truth. Lying to the women on the train station about having a brain tumor is an example of a time where Holden needs to man up, and be honest with someone for once. Lying will only dig Holden a big hole which he will have a tough time climbing out of, at a later stage in his life. One of the things I need to improve on as I grow up is being managing my time better. I frequently wake up late or leave the house late when i need to be somewhere. At my age, this is somewhat common and most likely it will not get me into a big amount of trouble, if any at all. As I grow up however, I will be held more accountable for being on time and being in the right place at the right time, every day.
This is all a part of growing up, and I believe growing up is something we all must do, whether we chose do it sooner or later, it needs to happen.
Hey Jared, you made some very good points about growing up. I agree with you about becoming more accountable for your actions such as lying as you grow up. Holden definitely needs to break his habit of lying all the time because there were points in the novel where I didn't even know if he was telling me the truth. But wouldn't you say that sometimes it doesn't really make much of a difference about lying? Like when Holden lied to the lady on the train station about having a brain tumor. He pretty much knew that he would never see her again, so maybe he just decided to tell a lie because he didn't really have much to talk about. Or maybe he just finds it fun to tell little lies like that that don't really harm anyone. But even if they're just little lies that don't seem to harm anyone, he's made lying a habit of his which will eventually dig him a big hole like you said.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people like Holden have to grow up or else they will pay for it later in life. If Holden keeps on lying to people it will eventually come around to bite him. Throughout his life he will be building a reputation around himself. If the lies and lies to almost every person he meets it will eventually destroy him reputation and he won’t be a reliable person in people’s eyes. People that lie as much as Holden can be destroying their future and not even know it.
ReplyDeleteNow that I have a job I also have to manage my time. I have always had plenty of time to do homework after school but now that is not the case. Now I have to manage my time around work so I can get it all done for the night. It’s good to learn these skills though because it only gets worse in college.
As we get older life begins to suck more. I agree with you how we have to wake up so early and on our own with out being late. It will be terrible. At a certain point in life people need to mature and live life with more responsibilities. Holden has not yet matured as you said. He still lies about big things and does not know how to confront his problems with out running away or making them worse. I do not think he can live by himself for a while to come.
ReplyDeletehey dudee. so basically i agreed that he does need to grow up, i said that with all that hes been through that he should be stronger than alot of the people around him, i think loosing his brother and his path in life should make him wanna figure it out even more.
